Argument of Fact

There are a lot of things people do not know about animals, shelter overpopulation and euthanasia. I think some people are even unaware that this is an issue and if they do not know that they definitely do not know that companion animals are being killed. To provide new information I am going to try and find the most recent stats, charts and information about animal euthanasia in the United States and maybe Texas. I found out that tax dollars sometimes have to be used to pay for the housing and killing of companion animals, which is information that some people may be unaware of. I am actually having trouble formulating a hypothesis. I always get confused doing papers like this. Once again I am going to get facts from scholarly articles to prove my case. I have a feeling I am going to need a bit of help on this paper.

Synthesizing

I tried to find three articles that had somewhat of a solution or new experiments that organizations and groups were trying to help animal shelter overpopulation. I was pleased when I read the article about the experiment in Florida and how even though it took some time, like all good things, they were really able to make a significant difference in the number of euthanized animals. I learned that overpopulation in animal shelters affects more than just the animals. I want to learn more about what veterinarians do in this situation. I want to find an article of a vets story or someone who has been impacted by an animal that has been euthanized because there were too many animals in the shelter. There are so many different views and ways to show that this is a problem and I want to find them. I do think I need to look other places than the library data base because most of the articles I find there are not very helpful. I do not know where I am going to look for my other two sources because I have gotten some good information. I want to find more recent articles, statistics and facts about overpopulation. I enjoy learning about this and I hope to find new, better, up to date information!

Finding Sources

I searched different combinations of  animal, euthanize and companion when I was looking for scholarly sources.  The most useful results were when I searched "companion animal euthanize." Most of the articles I found were about horses and rats. The articles about rats were talking about experiments where they used carbon to euthanize them. There were also debate type papers weighing the pros and cons of having to euthanize companion animals. Another debate was whether to treat or euthanize. When an animal gets a disease or gets hurt there is the question to euthanize or treat the animal for the existing condition. Although, my initial topic was about animals getting getting put down in shelters there wasn't very many articles about that specifically so I may have to gear my topic in a different direction. I was thinking about doing ways to prevent the illnesses and injuries that are cause for an animal to be euthanized. I haven't quite made a decision yet. There are also articles about the cost of such procedures. Whatever I choose I want to make sure there is more than enough information on the topic.

Euthinization and overpopulation of companion animals

Have you ever wondered what happens to the stray companion animals that we see roaming the streets? If they are not taken in by caring citizens they are either put in shelters, adopted but usually they are killed.

I have a soft spot in my heart for animals. I always have since I was a child. Once, I was walking and found a dying baby bird on the sidewalk. It was barely breathing and looked like it had been pecked by other birds. I read somewhere that a mother bird will not feed her baby if she doesn't recognize the scent. I went upstairs to my apartment, got a towel and a shoe box and to put the bird in. When I got inside I was sure the bird had not had any water. My mom is a nurse so I got a syringe filled with sodium chloride, which is just salt water, and put it in the baby birds mouth. I was so excited to see him drinking the water. I waited for my mom to take the bird to the nearest vet. When we got there I was very sad and disappointed when they told me they wouldn't take care of the bird because it was going to die either way. It made me wonder what other animals are turned down and how they are treated when no one wants to adopt or take care of them. I am broadening my knowledge of companion animals and euthinization because I want to know why unwanted or animals that aren't adopted are being killed in order to help the reader understand that there are simple solutions to this problem.

If you were stranded on an island what three things would you like to have with you? I would choose my cell phone, my nephew Kaeden and a bacon stockpile.  I'm ashamed to admit, I'm one of those stereotypical teenage girls who has their phone permanently attached to their hand. The funny thing about that is I'm not a big texter. I'm a tweeter. I'm addicted to twitter. I also like to see what is going on in other peoples lives because for some odd reason I enjoy living vicariously through my friends who's lives may as well be in a parallel universe because they're nothing like mine. Whenever I'm not able to check my twitter or instagram I get the feeling that I'm going to miss out on some huge event when I know I'm not. I, literally, thank God I didn't miss is the birth of my amazing nephew. Kaeden Cole Fletcher just turned one on November twenty-eighth of last year. I felt super special when my sister invited me to go to the delivery room with her instead of my mom. I know this sounds so cliche and lame but I never knew I could love someone as much as I love my nephew. He's my favorite person in the entire world and I would do anything for him. Bacon is just everything. Who doesn't like bacon? I was disappointed when bacon was no longer classified as a meat because it has so much fat. I think I love it so much because my mom has always bought turkey bacon. She's a weirdo. Of course there is more to me than technology, family and pork  but these are definitely the most important.
